Katong, or Tanjong Katong, marked the eastern boundary of Stamford Raffles' 1819 British settlement in Singapore. Originally spanning from Upper East Coast Road to Tanjong Rhu, it evolved from a serene retreat into a vibrant cultural hub.
In 1822, Raffles established a marine yard between Sandy Point and Deep Water Point, relocating Chinese settlers to boost the industry. By 1860, boatyards flourished. Before land reclamation added Marine Parade, Katong bordered the sea, attracting affluent Europeans, Jews, and Peranakans who built homes and resorts, making it a popular health retreat.
Etymology
"Tanjong Katong" means "turtle point" in Malay. "Tanjong" signifies "cape," while "Katong" refers to an extinct sea turtle species and the Fata Morgana mirage seen near the coast.
